The first Indian to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games, Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav (15 January 1926 – 14 August 1984), was an Indian wrestler. He was born in the small village of Goleshwar, in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Dadasaheb and Rukmini Jadhav gave birth to five children, and he was the eldest. His father was a wrestler himself and taught Khashaba the sport from a young age.

In the 1952 Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, Khashaba competed in the bantamweight freestyle wrestling event. He won his first two matches and qualified for the semifinals. Where he lost to eventual champion, Shohachi Ishii of Japan. He then went on to win the bronze medal. Furthermore, becoming the first ever Indian to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games.

Throughout his career, Khashaba competed in various national and international competitions, such as the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Although, He also coached at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Patiala. His students included some of Indias most prominent wrestlers such as Satpal Singh and Rajiv Tomar.

Awards And Honours

Khashabas legacy was finally recognized in 2001. When he was awarded the Padma Shri, Indias fourth highest civilian award. He was also posthumously awarded the Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in sports in 2004. In his honour, Dadasaheb Jadhav Nagar has been renamed to replace Goleshwar as his native village today and a statue of him has been erected there. In 1984, after his death, the Maharashtra government awarded the Chhatrapati Puraskar posthumously. Furthermore, the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 named the wrestling venue in his honour.
